Ploughing the Stony Land

The large landowners hire workers who tend to come from the large cities like Fes and Marrakech. They agree upon a salary and give them food and housing during their working season. The working days are from dawn till dusk, stopping to eat, have a drink or smoke a kifi pipe (shukshi). These young workers spend weeks sitting in bars waiting for someone to give them work and many go to the Valley of Rif looking for work in the fields. Unemployment racks Morocco and although everyone has enough to eat everyone is looking to make a few Dirham whichever way they can. Most of them are Bisnistas (from "business") so that whoever you ask, if they don't have it, they will take you to those that do or will buy it for their future client to get some commissions, be it selling hashish or some mud jars. You can wish for the most absurd thing and they will probably find it for you.
